Champagne and Sparkling Wines
Although Champagne is a sparkling wine, not all sparkling wines are Champagne. True Champagne comes only from the Champagne region in France and is produced under stringent rules in the appellation. Using primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes while complying to very specific vineyard practices, Champagne undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle.
Other areas of the world produce exceptional sparkling wines. Prosecco, a well-known sparkling wine from Italy, is made with Glera grapes and utilizes stainless steel tanks to produce the sparkling wine. Other sparkling wines produced around the world include Cava from Spain, Crémant from France, Franciacorta from Italy as well as outstanding selections from Australia, New Zealand, Austria and Germany.
